Happy New Year from Parker Orthodontics!

Many folks in Colorado consider the beginning of a new year a time to not only reflect on the year that was, but also to set personal goals for the upcoming year. How are you planning to improve your health and happiness in 2011? Dr. Collins and our team recommend that you make a New Year’s resolution to benefit your oral health!

It is important that New Year’s resolutions are reasonable and attainable, and that they improve your overall quality of life—for example, did you know that flossing every day is the very best way to prevent periodontal, or gum, disease? Using a straw when drinking sugary beverages can also help prevent cavities. There are many small steps that you can take to prevent cavities, oral infections and bad breath.

Be sure to give us a call if you need a few suggestions on ways to improve your oral health, or visit this helpful article from our friends at the Academy of General Dentistry (AGD). After all, we know your oral health is about more than just a beautiful smile.

Happy New Year!

Carmel, Chocolate, and Candy Canes..Oh MY! Keep your BRACES Sparklin’ Clean this Holdiday Season.

Everyone here at Parker Orthodontics understands that with all these holiday goodies everywhere you look, keeping your braces clean is exceptionally difficult this time of year. But keep in mind, making sure you properly clean your teeth is even more important when you have braces. Food bits have more spots than usual to hide in your mouth, so you must be diligent in order to avoid bad breath, swollen gums, discolored teeth and cavities. If you remove plaque regularly during treatment, you'll experience better results and shorter treatment time. Keep plaque at bay with these tips:

One tooth at a time. When you brush, take time with each individual tooth – at least 10 seconds each – and pay careful attention to the spots where your teeth touch your braces.

It’s all about the angles. Brush the tops of your teeth and braces with your brush angled down toward where they meet. Brush the bottoms of your teeth and braces with your brush angled up.

The tooth, the whole tooth, nothing but the tooth. While the front surface of your teeth may seem like the most logical to clean, it’s equally important to clean the inner surface of your teeth (tongue side) as well as the chewing surface. And be sure to clean along your gum line – a key spot for plaque buildup.

Step 1: eat, step 2: clean. While you’re in treatment, it’s important to brush after every meal. Bits of food can easily get caught between braces and teeth, and these food bits interact with bacteria in your mouth to cause decay. The longer food is in contact with your teeth, the greater opportunity for plaque to form. If you are eating somewhere that you can’t brush, thoroughly rinse your mouth with water.

Like a Boy Scout, always be prepared. The easiest way to be sure you can brush after every meal is to get in the habit of taking a toothbrush, toothpaste and floss with you wherever you go. Designate a special container just for your teeth-cleaning tools and keep it in your purse, backpack, or laptop case.

Remove the moving parts. If you have elastic bands or headgear, remove these parts before you brush or floss.

Fluoride is your friend.
Fluoride helps prevent cavities. Be sure to brush with fluoride toothpaste, and rinse with fluoride mouthwash.

Pointy brushes reach tiny places.
Interproximal brushes (sometimes called proxa brushes or interdental brushes) are cone-shaped and come in very handy for reaching spots around your braces that standard brushes can’t.

Find the floss for you. Regular floss works for some patients, but others find it easier to work with a floss threader, which helps you get the floss into tight places. Other patients like an all-in-one product called Superfloss, which comes with a stiff end for easy threading, a spongy section for cleaning wide spaces, and regular floss for narrow spaces.

Make time for the pros. It’s your job to take care of the everyday cleaning. But make sure to visit your dentist regularly while in treatment, to get the deep, thorough cleaning that only a professional can provide. If you need help finding the right Dentist for you, feel free to contact our office - we’d love to help!

Hope this helps!

Staying connected with Parker Orthodontics

At Parker Orthodontics, we embrace technology, whether it’s through the innovative orthodontic treatments Dr. Jeff Collins offers, our high-tech web site or our Facebook fan page. As you can probably tell, we love connecting with our patients online, whether it’s by sharing news on our blog or communicating ideas on our fan page. For social media to work, though, we understand that conversation is vital, and that’s why we invite you to join in and tell us what’s on your mind. Although social networks are hugely popular these days, we know they’re unpredictable and ever-changing.

While we take a little time to research how to best use social media, we thought we’d ask you, our loyal patients: How would you like us to use our social networks? What would you like us to share on our blog? Please post your thoughts or give us a call!

Ask Dr. Collins: Do cold germs really live on toothbrushes?

You may have heard something about about the germs that supposedly live on your toothbrush and wondered if it's really a cause for concern. Fall is upon us, and with it comes the dreaded cold and flu season. After recovering from your cold, Dr. Jeff Collins and our staff at Parker Orthodontics will tell you one of the most important steps you can take to avoid becoming reinfected is replacing your toothbrush!

Germs can linger on the bristles, and you risk prolonging your sickness by continuing to use the same toothbrush. Be smart - keep a spare, just in case! To protect your toothbrush from bacteria all year long, consider the following tips:

• Wash your hands before and after brushing

• Allow the brush to air dry after each use, harmful bacteria dies after being exposed to oxygen

• Store the toothbrush in an upright position to allow water to drain and dry faster

• Replace your toothbrush every 3-4 months. Worn bristles are less effective in properly cleaning your teeth, and can actually be damaging to teeth if used too long!

Hope these tips help! Feel free to call us at Parker Orthodontics if you have any questions or ask us on Facebook.

Parker Orthodontics, supporting National Orthodontic Health Month!

For our staff at Parker Orthodontics, it's hard to believe October is already upon us! October marks National Orthodontic Health Month, and while month-long event is organized by our friends at the American Association of Orthodontists, it gives us a chance to remind our patients which foods they should avoid while wearing braces.

We know there are many treats can cause havoc for trick-or-treaters who are going through treatment with Dr. Collins, and these treats may cause damage that could prolong your treatment time. The AAO recommends our patients avoid the following Halloween treats:

• Caramel
• Nuts
• Popcorn (including un-popped kernels)
• Taffy
• Jelly beans
• Hard pretzels
• Licorice
• Bubblegum
• Taco chips
• Ice

If you damage your braces, please give us a call immediately at (303) 841-5500. Typically, minor problems can be solved over the phone. Loose brackets or wires can usually be made more comfortable by applying some wax until the you can come into one of our offices, located in Parker, Castle Rock or Elizabeth.

Have a wonderful weekend!

Ask Dr. Collins: Why the Damon System?

Dr. Jeffrey Collins and our dedicated team at Parker Orthodontics are pleased to offer The Damon® System for our patients in Parker, Castle Rock, Elizabeth and the greater Denver metro area. Damon braces allow your teeth to move more comfortably and easily than traditional braces. Thanks to these innovative new braces, achieving your perfect smile will be faster and easier than you ever thought possible.

Now, you're probably saying, "All right, Dr. Collins. Give me the specifics on how Damon braces are an advantage."

Time-Saving

Damon's innovative technology of self-ligating braces saves you time in orthodontic treatment. The Damon system allows for fewer trips to our office, as well as faster movement of your teeth than with traditional braces. The light forces applied by Damon braces are "biologically compatible" meaning that they work with your body for gentler and quicker tooth movement.

Comfortable

Damon System braces have a unique slide mechanism that allows Dr. Collins to use far lighter forces to move teeth to their correct positions. That makes your treatment not only shorter, but it is also far more comfortable.

Because of its unique sliding door, the Damon bracket allows us to use high-tech, light-force wires to achieve tooth movement. This means less pressure on your teeth for more comfortable treatment. Not every orthodontist uses Damon self-ligating braces. The reason Dr. Collins does is simple: it means your experience in uncovering your radiant new smile will be more comfortable and convenient than ever.

To learn more about the Damon System, or to schedule a consultation with Dr. Collins, please give us a call at (303) 841-5500. Happy Wednesday and enjoy the rest of the week!

What's on your fall reading list?

It's almost fall, which means back to school time for most of our patients at Parker Orthodontics. Today, we wanted to remind all our patients about the importance of reading.

In addition to textbooks, it's always great to pick up a great novel or a comic book. Today, we thought we’d ask: What's on YOUR fall reading list? What are some of your all-time favorites?

Out of ideas for great fall reads? Ask us for suggestions, and Dr. Collins and staff would be happy to provide a few suggestions. You may also ask a local librarian for some ideas or check out these fall reading ideas that we came across today, courtesy of Borders.

Happy reading! Be sure to share with us your fall picks or your all-time favorites on our Facebook page!

Ask Dr. Collins: Why visit the dentist during my orthodontic treatment?

If you're brushing twice a day, as well as flossing during your orthodontic treatment, we think that's wonderful. But, remember that it’s also important for you to visit your general dentist every six months in addition to brushing your teeth a couple times a day (and visiting Parker Orthodontics, of course). Our staff will tell you regular dental checkups are vital for maintaining good oral health. Your dentist can:

• Check for problems that might not be seen or felt
• Detect cavities and signs of tooth decay
• Treat oral health problems early
• Show you how to properly brush and floss your teeth during your treatment

During an oral exam, your dentist will check the health of your child’s mouth, teeth, gums, cheeks and tongue. Checkups also typically include a thorough teeth cleaning and polishing. If you have not been to the dentist in the past six months, it’s time for you to schedule an appointment!

If you don't have a general dentist in Parker, Castle Rock, Elizabeth, Denver or nearby communities, please ask us and Dr. Jeff Collins will be happy to provide a few great references! We hope you've had an amazing weekend! :)

Parker Orthodontics' Mouthguard Day featured on Fox Channel 31!

You might remember us discussing the need to wear a mouthguard two weeks ago, but last Thursday, Fox Channel 31 came out to our office to do a story on our Mouthguard Day. In conjunction with Elizabeth Family Dental, Dr. Collins and our staff provided close to 150 custom mouthguards!

This is our 4th year that we have provided free custom mouthguards for the Elbert County School sports teams. Only by using a mouthguard can kids with and without braces avoid serious sports injuries on the field. Not only do they protect your mouth and appliances, but they give you and your parents peace of mind when you're on the field this fall!

Wednesday, August 11, 2010

National Smile Week at Parker Orthodontics!

It’s National Smile Week, and an ideal time for Dr. Collins and our dedicated staff at Parker Orthodontics to remind our patients to practice good oral hygiene to keep those teeth shining during your orthodontic treatment! That of course includes brushing and flossing regularly, avoiding foods that can stain your teeth such as tea and coffee and visiting your general dentist for checkups and cleanings.

And remember to smile at people you come across throughout the week, whether you know them or not! Smiles are contagious, and are GREAT to give and receive. In addition, did you know that smiling can actually help you live longer, according to a recent study? We hope you're having a wonderful summer! We have some great patient contests coming soon - stay tuned!

Parker Orthodontics, reminding you to protect your mouth this summer

With summer officially here for another seven weeks, Dr. Parker and our staff would like to take this time to remind our young athletes in orthodontic treatment to take care of both your mouth and appliances while participating in contact sports (and non-contact sports) this summer. Remember, only by using a mouth guard can kids with and without braces avoid serious sports injuries on the field. The next time you're in for a visit at Parker Orthodontics, be sure to ask us for a mouth guard, and we will provide one for you!

We hope you're having a great summer!

Invisalign and oral health, from Parker Orthodontics

We've discussed Invisalign treatment in previous posts, but today would like to share with you a few of the oral health benefits associated with Invisalign, which is a series of removable aligners that are not only nearly invisible, but they can straighten your teeth just as effectively as braces, and can even improve your oral health. Here’s how:

Healthy gums: Straight teeth allow a close fit for gums. This lessens the gum stress that is caused by crowded or widely spaced teeth, thus also reducing red and swollen gums.

Easy cleaning: Invisalign is removable, therefore brushing and flossing is easier and you are able to maintain a healthy mouth. These habits are vital to avoiding tooth decay, plaque and even gum disease.

Improved speech and chewing: Properly-aligned teeth don’t have the discomfort or compound speech impediments that can be caused by crowded teeth or a deteriorating jawbone.

If you have any questions about Invisalign, just ask Dr. Jeff Collins the next time you’re in for an appointment. Or, you may post your question on our Facebook page! We hope you had a great weekend!

Dr. Collins, helping you understand cavities

At Parker Orthodontics, we know one word nobody wants to hear when they visit the dentist is Cavity! But what, exactly, is a exactly is a cavity and how do you get one? A cavity is a hole that develops in a tooth when the tooth begins to decay. It’s important to get a cavity filled as soon as it’s detected so that it does not grow bigger.

So, what causes a cavity? A cavity is caused by plaque, a sticky substance that forms on the tooth as a result of germ and bacteria build-up. Plaque is acidic and as it clings to your teeth the acids eat away the outside of the tooth (also called the enamel) and a hole is formed.

According to Cavity-Free at Three, in Colorado,

•18% of 2-4 year olds have dental caries; 16% have untreated decay.
•45.7% of kindergarteners have dental caries; 26.9% have untreated decay.
•57.2% of third graders have dental caries; 26.1% have untreated decay.
•By age 17, 78% of children have had at least one cavity; 7% have lost a permanent tooth to dental decay.

Yes, cavities can be repaired by your general dentist, but here are a few simple steps you can take to prevent cavities:

• Brush your teeth with fluoride toothpaste at least twice daily
• Gently brush your gums to keep them healthy (when choosing a toothbrush it is recommended to use soft bristles)
• Floss your teeth at least once a day to remove plaque and food that may be caught between the teeth where your toothbrush can’t reach
• Limit the amount of soda and sugary treats you eat/drink
• Be sure to visit your dentist every six months for a teeth cleaning and check-up

We hope this helps! Please give us a call for more tips on your oral health during treatment with Dr. Collins!

Ask Dr. Collins: When should my child come in for a consultation?

Many parents here in Parker, Castle Rock, Elizabeth and surrounding communities around Denver assume they must wait until their child has all of his or her permanent teeth to come in for a consultation with Dr. Jeff Collins, only to find that treatment would have been much easier if started sooner. Did you know the American Association of Orthodontists recommend that every child have an orthodontic check-up no later than age seven?

That's right - seven.

Orthodontic evaluation at an early age provides one of two positive outcomes: For some, early identification or problems will lead to easier or shorter orthodontic treatment in the future. For others, a healthy prognosis will provide immediate peace of mind.

Early evaluation, Dr. Collins will tell you, may signal a need for early treatment. For some children, early treatment can prevent physical and emotional trauma. Aside from years of harmful teasing, crooked teeth are also prone to injury and detrimental to good oral hygiene. So if your child is nearing age seven, we invite you to give us a call at Parker Orthodontics to schedule a complimentary initial consultation.

Have a GREAT rest of your weekend everyone!

Ask Dr. Collins: Am I too old for treatment?

At Parker Orthodontics, nobody, and we mean NOBODY, is "too old" for braces! In fact, our staff at Parker Orthodontics read a fascinating statistic: adults getting braces has actually jumped 24 percent since 1996! Of course, braces help make your pearly whites strong, healthy and perfectly-aligned, but maybe the reason for the spike in adult braces is this: people want to look and feel great. In an age—and society—where looks matter as much as anything, and at a time when evenly-aligned teeth might be the difference between getting a job or a promotion, adults are choosing to invest in orthodontics. Orthodontic treatment with Dr. Jeff Collins can be successful at any age, and adults especially appreciate the benefits of a beautiful smile.

If you’ve been thinking about getting that perfect smile, we would love to have you visit for a complimentary consultation. Please give us a call to set one up and have yourself a great rest of the weekend!

Talkin' retainers with Dr. Jeff Collins

If you recently completed treatment at Parker Orthodontics, we’d like to congratulate you! Now that your braces have been removed, Dr. Jeff Collins will provide—or has provided you at this point—with your own set of retainers.

After braces are removed, your teeth may shift out of position if they are not stabilized. Our team at Parker Orthodontics, however, will always tell you that retainers help provide that stabilization. They are designed to hold teeth in their corrected, ideal positions until the bones and gums adapt to the treatment changes.

Wearing retainers exactly as instructed by Dr. Collins is the best insurance that the treatment improvements last for a lifetime. To learn more about the advantages of wearing retainers after your orthodontic treatment with Dr. Collins, please read this helpful article about retainers from KidsHealth. You may also give us a call!

Have a fun and relaxing Memorial Day weekend everyone!!

More exciting patient contests at Parker Orthodontics!

Our staff at Parker Orthodontics would like to inform you of two exciting patient contests under way: The first is our “Teacher Appreciation” Contest. We ask our patients to write a paragraph on why they feel their teacher deserves an A+. The team gets together and picks a few of their favorites (5-6) and then the winning patients get a pizza party for their whole class. Team members make a fun event of the party, bringing pop (caffeine free), pizza, goodies and practice handouts, etc… The kids love it and of course the teachers think it is the best!

We're also running our annual “Where in the World” contest. We put up a huge World map in the clinic and ask our patients to send in postcards and/or email us photos of themselves on vacation or just in the neighborhood, and then we attach them to the map. Anyone who participates is entered into a drawing for gift certificates and the grand prize winner receives a 4 pack to the local water park. This contest is so much fun, because everyone gets to enjoy the cards and pictures!

Give us a call or stop by if you'd like to participate! We look forward to seeing you!

Dr. Collins, helping you save face this spring

April - which is National Facial Protection Month - is almost gone, but not before Dr. Collins and team remind all our young athletes in orthodontic treatment to play it safe when out on the field. After all, nearly 60,000 people injure their faces annually while participating in sports activities, and teenagers account for 80 percent of all sports-related trips to the emergency room.

Here are a few ways to ensure your mouth’s safety this spring, courtesy of the American Association of Orthodontists:

1. Wear mouth guards for contact sports such as baseball, softball, soccer and lacrosse.
2. Wear a helmet
3. Wear protective eyewear
4. Wear a face shield to avoid scratched or bruised skin
5. Be alert, even as a spectator

We hope these tips help. Dr. Collins will tell you protective gear is vital for anyone engaging in tooth or mouth-threatening activities. If you have any further questions about any of these tips, please contact Parker Orthodontics. And remember to stay safe and have fun!

Ask Dr. Collins: Is Invisalign® for me?

Part of what makes Invisalign really "sing" is that clear aligners are customized for pretty much anyone's mouth. To find out if you are the right candidate for Invisalign treatment, the first thing Dr. Collins does is take an impression of your teeth and digitizes it. Using special software, he looks at the current positioning of your teeth and compares it to the way your teeth should look.

Next we use special software to map out the exact path your teeth will take from the beginning of your treatment to the end. Based on the results, a set of custom aligners are created just for your pearly whites. Throughout the course of treatment, you will be required to wear these clear, removable aligners one at a time; each one moving your teeth closer and closer to their final, perfectly aligned position. The best thing about it all? No one around you will even know you are wearing braces!

Dr. Jeffrey Collins is a certified Invisalign provider in the greater Denver area. If you have questions about Invisalign, or would like to find out if you are a candidate for Invisalign treatment at Parker Orthodontics, please give us a call.

Ask Dr. Collins: Who benefits from braces?

Braces aren’t just for pre-adolescents and teenagers anymore! Dr. Jeff Collins will tell you that anyone, at any age, can benefit from orthodontic treatment, whether it’s correcting a problem not treated in your younger years, or catching a problem early.

To ensure the best overall treatment, the American Association of Orthodontists, or AAO, recommends that children receive an orthodontic consultation as early as age seven. If a problem is evident, taking action early can spare a lot of treatment and expense down the road.

With state-of-the-art technology in a comfortable, friendly environment, we look forward to helping you achieve the beautiful, confident smile you have always wanted. Dr. Collins and our team are committed to providing you with an outstanding orthodontic experience. If you never received orthodontic treatment when you were young, don’t worry! At Parker Orthodontics, you’re never too old for a beautiful smile. Set up an appointment for a consultation and find out how adult orthodontics will transform your smile, as well as your life!

Meet Our Orthodontist

Dr. Collins received his undergraduate degree from the University of Colorado and was an associate professor in the Growth and Development Department. He also was awarded the Chairman's Research Award for excellence in the field of Orthodontic Research from Case Western Reserve University.
